~ THE CHRISTMAS WAFER ~
WITH THE COMMUNITY AT SAN DAMIANO MISSION
The tradition of breaking Oplatek – the Christmas Wafer – began in Poland shortly after Christianity came to the country in 966 and then adopted by the Slovak, Lithuanian, and Czech peoples. It has made its way into countless other households who find that its rich symbolism is an easily adoptable Christmas custom which also carries profound meaning.
Each person is given a piece of oplatek/Christmas wafer. Then, each person goes from person to person offering the Christmas wafer. A small piece of Christmas wafer is broken off and eaten while sharing well wishes and a brief expression of love.
The friars are inviting
all of our friends……
